Inspiring the Next Generation: Welcoming Future Talent into Our Workplace

As part of our commitment to community engagement, we recently welcomed a class from Loxley Hall School to our office for a behind-the-scenes look at how we build and support technology for education.

From the moment the group arrived, the energy was infectious. The visit was a great opportunity to introduce the students to the possibilities of a career in technology and to show that a busy workplace can be both productive and enjoyable.

We worked closely with Loxley Hall School to align with their ethos, helping ensure their students can succeed despite the social, emotional and behavioural barriers they may face.

It was essential to model the right culture and attitude, building positive relationships with young people who have often had negative experiences, and restoring their confidence, self-esteem, and mental health.

A day to remember

The visit gave students a real‑world glimpse of what working in education IT services looks like day to day. For many, it was their first time stepping into a professional office environment – and it clearly made an impression.
As one of the visiting teachers from Loxley Hall noted, the impact has lasted well past the day itself: “The boys are still talking about it now. They have taken a lot away from this session.”
Through interactive discussions, career journeys and plenty of honest conversations, we shared how people arrive in Edtech via different paths – including apprenticeships, career changes and continuous learning opportunities.
One particularly meaningful takeaway for the students was the accessibility of these careers, as their teacher remarked how eye-opening the variety of pathways can be: “They were surprised that you can do apprenticeships at any age and even up to Level 7.”

Sparking ambition

Perhaps the biggest success of the morning was the inspiration it sparked. Several students left the office genuinely picturing their future in the technology sector. The visiting teacher from Loxley went on:

One student asked how far Computeam is from where he lives, as he has said that he is coming to work for you when he leaves school!”

After learning about apprenticeship pathways, one student had already started thinking ahead:

That means technically I could start working with them next year.”

Moments like this remind us why initiatives like these are so crucial – they turn abstract, far-off career ideas into achievable pathways and remind all students that everyone belongs and has the potential and ability to learn and grow.

Bringing work to life

We also wanted to show that working life is just as much about people, culture and enjoying what you do, as it is about tasks and responsibilities.

At Computeam, we are proud to be regularly recognised by the Best Companies Index as a world-class employer, and that is entirely down to our team. Because of this, we really wanted to highlight the human side of working life to the students. Their teacher continued:

“I don’t think they realised that as well as work, people can enjoy themselves and have a laugh!”

Our team made a conscious effort to create a welcoming, relaxed environment, helping students feel comfortable asking questions and engaging in the sessions.

A special mention goes to Tito Joao (IT Consultant – 2nd Line), whose enthusiasm clearly stood out:

They loved his enthusiasm and how passionate he was about his job.

Why initiatives like this are so important

Workplace visits like these play a vital role in supporting young people as they explore their futures. Many students haven’t yet had exposure to professional environments, and experiences like this can:

Build awareness of career opportunities they may not have considered

Break down misconceptions about workplace culture

Highlight alternative routes such as apprenticeships

Boost confidence and aspiration

Provide relatable role models

By opening our doors, we’re helping bridge the gap between education and employment – making careers feel more accessible and achievable to all students, including those with complex social, emotional and mental health needs.

Looking ahead

Hearing that students took the time to reflect on their visit – and even write about it afterwards – means a great deal to us. It’s a testament to the impact even a short session can have.

We’re incredibly grateful to have hosted such an engaged and curious group, and we look forward to continuing our efforts to support the next generation of talent.

Who knows – maybe we’ve already met one of our future colleagues!
