Find out why Computeam is a World Class Employer

Your Name

Jamie Wilson

Current Job Role

Senior IT Consultant

When did you join Computeam?

2023

About me

I'm Jamie, a self-confessed geek and proud Yorkshire man! I come from a 20+ year background of supporting schools having worked for the public sector to self-employed business, company director and employee. Recently, and now with Computeam I've found the perfect role for me with a relaxed and supportive atmosphere but one where you can push yourself.

Why I joined Computeam

The small MSP I was working for lost a tender to Computeam - I had a look at the Computeam website and thought 'well, at least they look a good company'. When they won the second tender for IT Support for a Trust, a little to my surprise they offered to TUPE me across along with my colleague. As soon as I met with some of the staff here - From CEO to Account Manager to Techs, I knew joining would be a good thing.

My first role

When I was TUPE'd across, I was given the role of Senior IT Consultant (My daughter asked if that was because I was old - I couldn't deny it!), and I would line manage my colleague as I did before. We were both happy with this arrangement! I was also working closely with the Trust that I had 3 years experience with, so it was a nice progression, aided onboarding to Computeam and allows me the opportunity to continue the project with them.

My Current role

I'm only just over a year in to my role here and happy to continue as a Senior IT Consultant. Previously, I did 4 roles in one, so to be able to concentrate on one and doing the techy side is a nice change. I do love to help people though, so as part of my role, I get to dip into supporting colleagues with tech issues as well as some account manager bits and pieces. They're roles I've had before so hopefully I can be of service to our customers and to Computeam by using that experience now and again.

Training & experiences so far

Have always learned best by 'just giving it a go' (with suitable research), I had years of experience but I have never been one to collect qualifications. However, it's been enjoyable to embrace Computeam's passion for CPD and complete courses for Aruba, 3CX, Google and most recently my first official Microsoft qualification.  I was quite pleased with that as it's a long time since I sat a formal exam! However, my most prized award was winning the 'Passion' award at our annual Computmeet where all the company have a day of presentations, CPD and socialising. It was a complete surprise to win it but a huge boost for my 'standard mode of operation' to be appreciated.

Where do I want to be in 5 years

In 5 years? Alive and kicking I hope! I don't mind telling the world that 3 years ago I had Cancer - and beat it. It's a cliche but it does give you a new outlook. I'm here to enjoy life as much as I can - that's being as successful in my career as I can but also doing the most important things - spending time being with people you love and enjoying the things you love. Luckily that's where the geek bit comes in - I love my work too!

Outside of the office

Outside I work I... play about with computers. I'm into automation at the moment so I work on automating things in my home - lights, heating, washing etc. It's helps save both money and the planet! As I mentioned, I also love spending time with my family. My Daughter wants to be a professional rugby player so we're often travelling around to games and training 3 or 4 times a week. Both my children and I are season ticket holders at Sheffield Wednesday, we enjoy being miserable most Saturdays! My wife and I occasionally see each other at the end of busy days - but we do try to enjoy what time we can by having holidays when possible - small or large, with or without the kids.

And finally, I'm a governor at 2 primary schools and a member of our GP Practice patients groups. As well as being nosey, I like to try and give something back to my two passions - education and the NHS. If I can help just a little bit, its worth the time.
