Sustainable IT Practices in Education | Computeam’s Commitment to the Environment

A long-term strategy for climate responsibility

Here at Computeam, we remain committed to reducing our environmental impact through practical, measurable actions that align with and exceed national targets for climate action.

As a specialist IT provider in the education sector, we understand that digital services carry a carbon cost. In response, we launched the Computeam Climate Project back in 2021 – a wide-reaching initiative focused on achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2045; five years ahead of the UK Government’s 2050 target.

Our team’s work to reduce emissions has already had an impact, with a 23% reduction in average carbon output per employee since 2021.

The Climate Project is a strategy that combines internal changes, sustainable procurement and client-facing initiatives to address carbon emissions across every part of the business. It reflects a belief that lasting change must be part of a long-term, shared responsibility across the education and technology sectors.

Practical steps inside and outside the organisation

From the way staff travel to how offices operate, Computeam is driving internal changes to reduce its carbon footprint.

The introduction of a new electric and hybrid company car scheme is part of a broader push to limit the impact of travel to and from client sites. While much of Computeam’s service delivery takes place remotely, engineers and consultants still make in-person visits. Our EV initiative also includes a bike-to-work scheme and incentives for ride-sharing – reducing emissions from commutes into regional hubs.

In our office spaces, we’ve implemented numerous tangible changes, from energy-efficient LED lighting to partnering with Veolia on a zero-waste recycling scheme. Meanwhile, we also look to actively track our environmental outputs and run paper recycling programmes to reduce waste.

These internal policies are supported by a climate-positive workforce certification through our long-standing partnership with Ecologi.

Technology procurement with sustainability in mind

Sustainable device selection and responsible supply chain practices are a core part of Computeam’s procurement strategy.

The procurement and solutions team is focused on sourcing the most energy-efficient devices available, helping schools reduce long-term environmental impact from their IT investments. All packaging used by Computeam is recyclable or compostable, and we work closely with suppliers to ensure shared environmental standards are met.

As part of our broader support for Multi-Academy Trusts, we have also embedded sustainability into our purchasing frameworks. This is designed to help education settings acquire IT equipment that is both compliant and environmentally responsible, without sacrificing cost-effectiveness.

Supporting schools in meeting their sustainability goals

Computeam believes that meaningful change in education requires practical support for schools and trusts to meet their own environmental targets.

Through a partnership with Acer for Education and Ecologi, Computeam has created a tree-planting initiative linked directly to IT procurement.

For every device purchased, a tree is planted in a dedicated Ecologi forest, with clients given access to a live online link to see the impact of their contributions. Schools are encouraged to explore the resource with students, offering an opportunity to connect digital learning with environmental education.

While initiatives like these offer a clear, visible benefit, Computeam also supports schools by recommending devices and services that use less energy, require fewer resources and have a longer usable life.

Shared progress through sector-wide collaboration

We believe that environmental progress must involve the whole education technology sector, including clients, suppliers and partners.

The Computeam Climate Project is an ongoing effort that reflects both the urgency of climate action and the complexity of achieving true sustainability.

As well as becoming a climate-positive company thanks to the active steps taken, by making our strategies and approach visible, we hope to influence broader change in how the sector approaches energy use, procurement, and service delivery.
