Artificial intelligence (AI) has made steady yet sizeable inroads into everyday life over the last half-decade. From search algorithms and digital assistants to customer service chatbots and generative LLMs, you’re never too far away from the latest iteration of this ever-advancing technology.
In education, its impact is beginning to surface in practical classroom applications.
For school leaders and education decision-makers, the task now is to determine howthese tools can improve outcomes and support a broader range of pupil needs in a manageable, ethical and meaningful way.
Increasingly, that also means putting the right foundations in place around strategy, policy, staff confidence and safe use – so AI can support learning without creating extra risk or workload.

Personalised learning is not a new idea
The benefits of being able to shape learning to suit individual pupils have long been understood, supported by both pedagogical tradition and research.
The Education Endowment Foundation’s Teaching and Learning Toolkitreports that individualised instruction can lead to progress gains of up to 4 months, particularly when it complements existing classroom practice.
The difficulty, as most teachers will attest, is time. Adapting materials, tracking progress and responding to individual needs requires sustained effort – a challenge compounded by rising class sizes and mounting administrative demands.
Certainly, AI can offer means to automate parts of this process. Adaptive learning platforms powered by machine learning algorithms can adjust questions and content in real time based on pupil performance. In theory, this allows for a learning experience that meets each child at their own level, while still operating at scale.
The current state of AI in UK classrooms
Although AI remains relatively new in mainstream UK education, its use is on the rise. According to the National Literacy Trust, the percentage of teachers who said they had used AI has almost doubled since 2023, rising from 31% to 58% in 2025 – with numbers undoubtedly set to increase in the coming years.
One example already in use is CENTURY Tech – an AI-powered platform used in hundreds of UK schools. It analyses how pupils interact with content and recommends personalised pathways for revision and homework. The system also provides real-time feedback to teachers, highlighting where pupils may need intervention or additional support.
EdTech company Sparx Learning offers a similar approach with its maths homework platform, which adapts difficulty and offers immediate feedback. A recent independent evaluation by ImpactEd found improved pupil confidence and engagement in schools using the platform consistently.

Closing learning gaps through intelligent feedback
One of AI's clearest contributions lies in diagnostic feedback. Automated marking and analysis can provide students with instant responses, allowing them to correct misunderstandings while the topic is still fresh – thus reducing reliance on time-restricted teacher marking and giving pupils a chance to reflect and revise more effectively.
Speed allied with consistency: AI systems can review hundreds of answers without fatigue or bias, making it easier to identify patterns in misconceptions across a class or year group. Teachers then use this information to plan more targeted interventions.
Critically, AI tools can support lower-attaining pupils by identifying learning gaps early and offering appropriately scaffolded tasks without drawing attention to those who need additional help.
While such tools can save time and improve responsiveness, schools should be cautious not to remove human input from the loop altogether. AI might be able to suggest and support to a certain degree, but it should not replace the expert judgement of teachers and support staff who understand the pupil behind the data.
Supporting inclusive education with AI tools
Inclusion is another area where AI shows much promise. Tools such as Microsoft’s Immersive Reader, which uses natural language processing to adapt on-screen text to suit reading levels and assist pupils with dyslexia or English as an Additional Language (EAL), are already in wide use.
Speech-to-text and real-time translation services are becoming more accurate, helping schools support learners with speech impairments or limited language proficiency. AI-driven transcription tools also assist in capturing notes or summarising lessons, making classroom content more accessible to pupils with additional needs.
While these tools should never be seen as a replacement for specialist support or human guidance, they canenhance access to learning and reduce reliance on one-to-one interventions, particularly in schools with stretched support resources.

Limitations and ethical considerations
Despite its promise, AI in education is not without limitations. Algorithms are only as good as the data they are trained on, and there are ongoing concerns around bias, data privacy and transparency. In schools, these issues take on even greater significance.
A report by the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI) highlights the need for schools to be cautious when using AI tools, particularly where automated decision-making is involved. There is also the question of workload: if AI tools generate data, teachers need time and specialised training to use it effectively – otherwise the supposed efficiencies may create more pressure rather than less.
There are, however, positive signs that schools are approaching these tools critically. Most recently, the Department for Education updated its Generative AI: product safety standards guidance in January 2026, setting clearer expectations around areas like filtering, monitoring and reporting, security, privacy and data protection, governance, and safeguarding-related design considerations for educational settings.
In practice, this is where a structured approach is vital. Many trusts are now formalising an AI policy, agreeing on a clear approved tools route for staff, and building in a repeatable approval process so new AI applications don’t create unmanaged risk.

What role should schools play in AI adoption?
Schools do not need to adopt the latest AI tool to be seen as forward-thinking. In fact, a measured approach is likely to be the most sustainable. Rather than pursuing technology for its own sake, schools should prioritise tools that clearly support their existing goals – whether that’s raising attainment, closing learning gaps or improving accessibility.
Teachers remain central to those ideas. AI can assist, analyse and suggest, but the value still lies in human judgment – the ability to interpret data within the wider context of a pupil’s emotional, social and developmental needs.
